THE DEBT

death

A debt owed because I lived

To a man who doesn’t forgive

Patient, he can be at times,

Cruel he is, when he comes for his debt.

A blessing it is, when the old pays the debt,

A disaster it is, when the young pays.

He answers some when they call to pay their debt,

He turns deaf ears to others when they call to pay theirs.

If he ever makes it around the corner

My prayers shall be;

When I lay me down to sleep,

I pray my soul the Lord to keep.

If he ever comes a-knocking

And I die before I wake,

I pray the Lord my soul to take
